As a volunteer you will be Little Brothers — Friends of the Elderly's vital connection to our community. Your main purpose will always be serving our elderly friends in some capacity.
Become a visiting volunteer to an elderly person living in Hamilton County. The elderly friends we visit on a regular basis are people who have little social support. Most of these elders are fairly lonely and isolated and would welcome a friendly visitor. This program is at the heart of our effort to provide friendship and social contact. We require visiting volunteers to make a commitment to visit their elderly friend on a regular basis — twice monthly and initially for one year. Your time spent together is up to you and your elderly friend as far as when you visit, what you do and where you may go together. Visiting Volunteers are assigned a current visiting volunteer mentor after completion of our orientation to assist with the matching process, answer any questions. Visiting Volunteers are expected to attend one of our quarterly volunteer training per year.
Volunteers are needed to call our elderly friends on a regular basis. Volunteers are matched one on one with an elder and asked to call him or her on a weekly basis.
Throughout the year, especially in the summer we plan outings for the elderly to enjoy. These outings may include ballgames, picnics, and a fishing trip, special theme parties (St. Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, and Halloween). We need volunteers to drive elderly to and from the event, spend time with them at the event, set-up, serve, and clean-up.
One of the nicest things we can do is remembering our older friend's birthday. We need volunteers to visit, share a cake and bring gifts and flowers to an elderly person on their birthday. This is a commitment on that day of approximately 1–2 hours and is a lot of fun. We supply the cake, gifts, flowers and you supply the friendship.
We have a quarterly Birthday party at our office (February, May, August, November) and need volunteers to assist with driving, cooking, set-up, clean-up and entertaining.
On the first Wednesday of every month from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm we bring our elderly friends interested in expressing their artistic side to our office for an afternoon of art. Volunteers coordinate the activities and need assistance with donations of art supplies; assistance is also needed with transportation.
On the third Thursday of every month we bring our elderly friends residing in area nursing homes to our office to enjoy a home cooked meal, entertainment and fellowship. We need volunteers to assist with transportation, set-up, cooking, serving, clean-up, entertaining. This program runs from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm.
Little Brothers–Friends of the Elderly celebrate the holidays with our elderly friends because this is when they can feel the loneliest. We visit the elderly in their home/apartment on Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. We bring a hot meal with flowers and additional goodies. We also visit our friends residing in area nursing homes taking them a basket of goodies. We also visit three nursing homes on the holidays taking gifts to all the residents residing in the home. We need volunteers to visit the elderly on these holidays. We also need volunteers to help set–up, cook, clean–up and donate items. We also have parties in which the elderly need to be transported to and from the party. We also need volunteers to cook, set–up, serve and clean up at these parties. If you have a talent you would like to share we are always in need of entertainers (magicians, singers, musicians, etc).
